(Not the small stuff because a 3 year old can`t handle that yet.) For boys another popular gift would be a toy truck or toy car or also a toy train. My 3 1/3 yr. old loves his big brother's Leapster so much he is getting his own. It is great, we have had one for two years and I would highly recommend it. His favorite game is Dora Wildlife Rescue. (Also a plus, the batteries seem to last a really long time).

I have several nieces and nephews in the same age groups. Their two grandmothers travel together to Europe once a year. Here are some gifts that they love: For your 3-year-old niece --- A Steiff bear or animal, or a puzzle made by Glückskäfer or Ravensburger. Also, the dolls from Zapf Creation are adorable, or perhaps a doll clothed in the Black Forest tradition. For your 5 year old nephew --- A German soccer jersey (my nephew loved this), or a small Alpine weatherhouse or Black Forest cuckoo clock. I don't think it is possible to emasculate a 3 year old. They don't have gender confusion, they just want what they like. However, older kids might make fun of him. Kids are mean and love an excuse to tease other kids. Plus, if it is a toy that will last a few years, he may stop liking Dora before it wears out. I would give him a gender neutral Jeep for this reason alone.

They can be purchased either at Target or online. There are loads and loads of trains ranging in price from $4 to about $15. Then there are Play Sets and tracks to go along with them. My boys have had hours and hours of fun playing with these trains. 3.Aquadoodle Sing N’ Doodle – This fun activity mat incorporates two activities in one. Your three year old can enjoy music fun singing along with Old MacDonald. The child can also stamp or draw with water and watch the area on the mat dry and the color disappear after 30 seconds. Children can also hear animal songs on the mat. This is a fun activity for children two and up.
